Can AutoCAD 2014 save back to a AutoCAD 2006 file?

The choice you need from the pull-down is AutoCAD 2004. (2004, 2005, and 2006 all use the same file format.)

Bearing in mind that there are 'issues' saving back to earlier versions.  entities/properties that did not exist in the earlier version will be challenging.  Especially as you can't look at it and verify what the earlier version will see.  (once you open that 'saved back to 2004 format dwg' in 2014, it's a 2014 drawing again.

What if you use DWG Trueview? Should work unless the entities in question are being "round-tripped"

DWG Trueview 2008 is still available too.

TrueView is basically just the OEM version of AutoCAD with editing commands stripped.

A TV 2008 would at least let one validate to that level.    I don't know of any legal way to accurately view a 2004 file - unless one happens to have a version of 2004 that was never upgraded laying around.  We've been on sub since before it was sub, so I sure don't.
