Would you buy a Kindle?

Surely there is a market here. What is the most demanding reference resource
which would benefit you as a slave? CAD Manual? Specs? Codes? Detail
libraries? Dirty jokes? Note Amazon just announced software developers can
now develop apps that run on the device...

We are discussing business tools, not toys or fashion trends. There is a
time and place for the latter :))

Yeah but I think people have shown that isn't what they want. Look at the
little netbooks when they came out a couple years ago. Cheap and really all
you could do was surf the web. They have now turned into a machine nearly as
expensive as low end laptops.

Actually, you and I are in agreement and I believe the netbook and the
reader devices are on a rapid path to convergence with the likely market
leader being some type of netbook device that does not neccessarily
implement the clamshell form factor.

Would it not be vastly more appropriate to simply develop a decent tablet
computer and not try to reinvent the Kindle to do things that it clearly was
not
designed to do?

Let's wait and see what Apple does on the 27th...
If they do launch a tablet it'll be interesting to see what they've done, what OS they're using and how they intend to shape the market.

In the meantime:

Or this one:
http://gizmodo.com/5453636/viewsonic-vtablet-101-has-decent-specs-and-terrible-timing

And then this....

Okay...I'll stop now.
Truthfully, I'm a tablet fan and have been disappointed in their offerings to date. The things are full of promise and short on reality.
Perhaps their time is now which might spell doom for the kindle...

I don't know about these links and can't view them from here. But you can download a reader app from b&n that will run on windows, mac or I-Phone. So you don't even need a nook if you always have one of those handy and don't mid reading on them. For recreational reading I prefer a non-backlit screen.
You can also download PDF & EPUB from google-books and use the b&n reader. It's free whether you buy a nook or not.
I don't buy products I can't even replace the battery in!

NO!
Why pay $200.00 for something then have to pay another $25.00 or so for
something to read on it? I can go to the used book store and get the same
reading material with pocket change, then when I'm finish reading it resell
it and get my money back. Are there used e-book stores out there yet? If
you're stranded out in the middle of nowhere can you start a signal fire
with a e-book, can you place it in the privy and tear a page out of it?

I don't believe I've seen any e-books for $25. Most newer releases run around $10. There are a lot for $5-$7 and a bunch for free on the b&n site. Plus anything you can download from Google Books for free.
I didn't buy it for myself. My wife gave it as a present. My problem is I don't sell or resell my books. I keep them. I think it was her way of keeping more books out of the house 🙂

Aaaaaah! That probably explains why my husband wanted to buy me one for
Christmas right after I asked him to put in some more shelves for me. 😄

(ftr, I told him 'no' and he got me a camera instead)

I like trading books with my son... you can't loan a Kindle book to a friend
to read...

😄

yeah, but, my husband still hasn't... instead of facebook, I got him a
baby, so he wouldn't keep after me for all those little things around
the house. 😉

You can with a nook if they have one or a reader. There's an app for that too. Or if it's a free book they can just download a copy. Edited by: AllenJessup on Jan 26, 2010 1:25 PM

IT'S A BOY!

Well, not really:

We'll see if it's a kindle killer, or not.
