Whats the the difference

I am a detailer for a steel fabricating company. A fellow coworker has approached me with a program called zwcad2006. We currently use Autocad 06LT. He is wanting us to start using this program instead of Autocad because he said its cheaper. I'm not sure that money is an issue. Can anyone tell me the difference and what would be a better choice?

two questions...

how long has the other software been around?
and
do you share files with others outside your company?

It's cheaper because it's a flavor of IntelliCAD.

ZwCAD's current and future compatibility with the Autodesk .DWG format
is dependent on it's relationship with the Open Design Alliance (ODA)
and the ODA's ability to continue to reverse-engineer the DWG file format.

Autodesk is currently suing the ODA.

Also note that ZwCAD is only compatible up to AutoCAD DWG v2006. That's
already one DWG version behind and two AutoCAD versions behind.

These items may or may not have an impact on your decision.

I'd say it's probably not the best idea.
If the change were to something else with a decent marketshare, or
something everyone you were already working with is using (Bentley
products or something perhaps), then maybe I could see a reason to change.

You can come up with your own reasons by comparing the capabilities of the 2
products, the future of the products and your company (ie, do you want to
hire CAD staff in the future - are you going to find many experienceed zwcad
users? - do your CAD people need to be experienced to do what you do with
it?) and deciding what you currently need from CAD software and what
direction you're going with it.

AutoCAD LT is already pretty cheap relative to other CAD packages.

How much cheaper can zwcad be anyway, and how many seats would you buy.

If your firm has say 20 seats of LT, and would save 200 bucks a seat if they
switched....is $4000 a good enough reason to switch? And if it sounds
good, then you need to look at how you share files with architects and
engineers outside your firm.

If your firm is itchy nd wants to spend a few thousand bucks, why not use
the money to upgrade 06 to 08LT? I don't know all the improvments, but
from what I have read about AutoCAD 2008, you could see some significant
changes that help in your firms productivity and efficiency which will help
pay for the upgrade in the first half of the year.
