What do you bring to an interview?

IT has been so many years... As a CAD Manager what would YOU bring to an
interview for a potentially fantastic job opportunity?

Anything you can. Any certificates you have from training. If you can get
permission from the person who you were working for bring some samples of
your work and copies of any manuals your written. Even screen shots of
project folders you've set up and a list on any apps and customization
you've done.

I haven't been interviewed for a while. But the folder of training
certificates I brought seemed to help. The interviewer copied them and
attached them to my application. But the interview wasn't for CAD manager.
Had to work up to that.

A lot depends of if you're being interviewed by someone who understands CAD
or by an HR type

I a ctually have created a protfolio, just like designers and artists. It includes copies of the CAD Standards Manuals, memos that I've writeen to management regarding what's needed and how to fix it. It also included powerpoint presentations that I use during my training sessions. I also have a drawings, documents, and anything else that show both my capabilities and strengths.

I keep this updated on a regular basis, and I have found it to be very instrumental in getting my point across.

Just a resume.

It would list my certificates and any targeted training, as well as
references to my CAD Manuals and other points of professional
accomplishment... along with an invitation to explore any of those more
closely.

One interview I had, the interviewer (technical interviewer) quizzed me
deeply on each item (qualifications, software expertise, etc)... then
started commenting on some of the articles I'd written about my industry
(oh, yes, he Googled me before the interview). He did ask to see one
thing in a follow up interview, which was a peek at my document database
(but, granted me extra time to populate it with fake placeholder
information).

I think flipping through a bunch of papers that could easily be
summarized in one line on my resume would have detracted a bit from the
conversation.
But, keep in mind, I'm not a designer, so I wouldn't be bringing along
any drawings to show off my skills.

I did also interview with the HR director for this firm, and she
concentrated more on my education, my work and salary history and my
general friendliness.
Sadly, they had a less than robust vacation plan and expensive
insurance... 😞

The next company that I interviewed for... well, I saved them time, and
pointed them to where they could find my industry articles in my cover
letter.

Ten extra copies of your resume and cover letter you sent in initially.

A list of all the things a typical application asks for, names and address and phone numbers for past employers, references, etc.

A pad and pen, have questions you want to ask. Write down the names of everyone you interview with, use that to immediately write thank you letters the same day. Point out in the letter your strengths and what you can do for them.

A knowledge of the company you are interviewing and have intelligent questions about the company, their market, whatever. Show them you spent some time learning about them.

The realization that you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. Too many people go in with hat in hand looking for a job, they should be looking for a good fit for them just like the company is looking for a good fit for them.

When we decided to move back to Austin and I flew down to make the rounds of
interviews, I took my computer with me everywhere I went. "I can show you
some examples of applications that I've written," went a log way when the
conversation went that way.

Take the ability to explain technical solutions to non-technical people and
how those solutions will save the company money.
