Does anyone know AutoDesk's official stand on running anti-virus software
with AutoCAD?
I know recommend against it, but I am looking for a white paper that
documents it.
Thanks for your help.

Joel,
There is no real whitepaper available from Autodesk on this. I can tell you
from experience some virus applications running in the background
(especially in Win9x/ME) can continually take more system resources until
the instant Win9x auto reboot problem occurs, cause AutoCAD to crash, or
causes system performance problems. This is the reason it is mentioned in
the readme to not run anti virus applications with AutoCAD.
Sincerely,
Shaan Hurley

Sorry, the AutoCAD readme.
From the AutoCAD 2000i readme:
"Operating System
IMPORTANT: It is strongly advised that you disable all anti-virus software
before running AutoCAD under Windows 98. Serious problems that affect your
operating system may arise if you do not do this."

Dennis,
Any AutoCAD should be effected by this in the Windows environment especially
under Win9x.

Thanks for the information Shaan.
So what is a cad user to do, run "unprotected" if they are running Windows
98?
With Autodesk marketing internet collaboration with 2000i as a major
feature, run with no virus protection? I am going to have a difficult time
convincing any company that has been "bitten" by a virus, not to run virus
software.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dennis

Dennis,
This problem can occur in Win9x with any Windows applications not just
AutoCAD. We felt it necessary to mention as it could result in you losing
data.

Just one person's/company's experience here: We use/have used Computer
Associate's Inoculan/InoculateIT with AutoCAD r13 (one seat) and AutoCAD LT
(v1 thru 2000) with no problems on Win3.1, Win9x, NT 4.0, & Win2000. I have
worked at another company's site where they also run Inoculan and AutoCAD
r14 on Win9x with no problems.
I've seen Inoculan detect and stop viruses that got past McAffee's
(up-to-date sigs on both). We've been running Inoculan/InoculateIT for 7
years now and have never been completely infected. Only once did a virus
install (an email virus) on one machine, but it caught it and removed the
core components so the virus could not run. I consider that to be a partial
infection.
All of our machines are not the latest and greatest, so resources are
important. Our low-end CAD stations are Overdrive 400s (originally P75s, so
60mHz bus) with 88 megs of RAM running Win98 or NT 4 and using AutoCAD LT
2000. LT is just as much of a system hog as "full" AutoCAD.
Computer Associates has a free for personal use or 30-day full trial
corporate use at their web site.

Another point of view: We use Acad 14 & 2000i on a mix of Win98 and Win2000
machines, with both McAfee and Norton AV running all the time, and have never
had any of the potential problems mentioned. YMMV.
