OT Windows Question

I did a bad thing at home. I have forgotten my password to an adminsitrative
account (Windows XP Pro SP2). I've been changing it regularly and writing it
down on a piece of paper that I keep in my wallet. I got distracted
yesterday morning and didn't get 'er done. I know the consequences to us
novice users. I stand to lose everything once I reinstall the OS.

Is there a hack, a special contact, anything or anybody I can talk to to get
me around the unknown admin password.

There are a number of ways to get it back. One I just took for a test
drive for grins, and it worked.

It is free if you want to wait a day. Want results faster you will have
to pay. Some are wary of it but like I said it worked and caused no
problems.

Rick,

There are boot disk programs that can reset or blank out the password, but
won't give you the existing password. Would that work? I'm having trouble
finding the link.

Thanks for all the input. While in a mild panic, a person forgets the obvious answers. The links and the Google phrase were very helpful. I have two or three items that I will try tonight.

You think you have a foolproof system....By the way, I will be creating a password reset disk this time.

Floppy disks have a habit of becoming just as "dis-functional" as the slip
of paper in the wallet Rick. 😉

Maybe a cc: to another email address?

I like no. 3 also - theough it seems a bit limiting - I would have thought the addition of any way that works might cover it. I am having issues retrieving scans from a Xerox scanner at the moment, nobody seems to think its their problem - IT say its the siftware, software support says its our network or setup, me I found that I can access the scanned hard drive using internet explorer and the ftp:// then the ip address of the scanner and its directory and then save using save target as- and its quicker than the supplied software. I have passed this to my other users with the same problem (about 3 out of 15 users) so until IT and software support figure whose problem it is we can all get to the images scanned - CAD managed 🙂

Ok I found this one - not my IT- it was the anti virus - I have now added an exception so that it ignores calls from the xerox software when blocking ftp incoming and outgoing. I have informed my IT and they will be spawning that one out to everyone in the next anti virus update - Gah IT Hmmpf
internet explorer worked as that was on the exception list.

The Mr. Maeding is the "James" I "thought" I was addressing. 😮

I can see what might have easily caused your reaction though.

Sorry for leaving the specificity out of my post. 😞

Tried to create the reset disk. Got as far as trying to put a blank, formatted floppy in my non-existent floppy disk drive.

Every computer I build still has a floppy drive, they are around $10 and
only get used for this type of diagnostic work.

I normally do to. I was on the "floppies are old technology" band wagon when I bought it. I've been cussing the decision about once every two or three months when I could use one. I suppose I could just install one.

I spec one in all my computers nowadays.

Rick
