Local Admin Rights

Autodesk Please Clarify this issue of "Local Admin Rights" ...is it necessary or not?

On XP OS I understand the reason...but with Windows 7 as the new upcoming (soon to be the de-fact-o) OS the policy permissions are better but can we still manage to operate without worries of crashing due to protected system variables?

Now it says UN-clearly in the Stand-alone Install Guide that...

"To install Autodesk products, you must have administrator permissions. However, you do not need to have domain administrative permissions. After the installation has completed, it is strongly recommended that user accounts have power user rights, but the program can also be run with a limited user account."

I've tried this in the past with again XP "Power User" permissions and with no avail have resorted back to giving Local Admin Rights to fix re-occuring issues.

Does the Windows 7 "Power User" account profile work these days?

My understanding is that Autodesk software(s) write to restricted parts of the Registry and Program Files folder amongst other places outside of confines of "User" privileges and therefore without Local Admin Rights potential issues with daily operation is inevitable.

Does this still stand true today?

According to Microsoft Technet...

User Account Control in Windows 7 Best Practices
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 9793(WS.10).aspx

Users should always run as standard users with the following exceptions:
• The user travels frequently and may need to install applications or print drivers while traveling.
• The user uses applications that require administrative privilege and that an application compatibility database cannot correct.

...does Autodesk softwares constitute the 2nd exception listed?

Thanks for your help Travis...

It appears you are somewhat correct...

Registering Autodesk® Inventor™ on Windows® XP or Windows Vista & Windows7™

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=11768501&linkID=9242018

"If you are a user with limited user rights and you temporarily need administrator rights

  • Right-click the Inventor desktop icon. Click Run as (on XP), or Run as Administrator (on Vista & Win7).

This will allow you to run Inventor without having to log off and log back in as an administrator."

I would heed the warning that daily add-in and macro usage may still be effected...wihtout Local Admin Rights...however according to the above link you can just RMB on the IV shortcut and choose to run as an Administrator? ...really? ...it implies one does not need Admin Rights to run as Admin...huh?
