Firewall question

So, not really a CAD Management question, or even related to an Autodesk
product, but I know where the smart folks hang out so I will ask here.

Given a sole proprietor architect, with a DSL connection, and wanting to
balance security with ease of use (I.e. minimal user intervention after
install) would you go with WinXP Home's built in software fire wall, or
Norton Personal Firewall, or is software firewall just not good enough and
you would want a router with firewall even for a single user.

Thanks,
Gordon

I personally use both a software firewall, Norton, and a router... I have a
cable connection at home... I would use the router route... ask this
question again on the network newsgroup... you may get better responses...

As cheap as a basic router is, I'd go with that. They can be had for under
$100 (some are considerably under that,) and will give you more peace of
mind than depending on your machine to handle it.

The XP firewall is not very robust.

I concur but I would be cautious about recommending the 'under $100'
choices as they are usually little more than routers.

Software firewalls -- especially Norton -- can be obtrusive and often
interject all sorts of conflicts when outbound to the web.

Netgear is a highly credible choice for the SOHO. I recommend the
FVS318 ProSafe VPN that can be found under $150. Do some
due diligence and read reviews to verify my recommendation.

Google: "fvs318"+"review"

Eventually, even a sole proprietor will have more than one computer
networked together. A hardware firewall protects all machines.
Software firewalls must be installed and maintained on each machine.
