Electrical to '05 conversion standards

I recently recieved a question regarding the ease of converting drawings made in Autocad Electrical to Autocad 2005. I am not really up to speed yet on Electrical, but I am assuming there is a method of conversion. My real question though is how to convert layers on a global level from one set of standards to another. The drawings were made by a contract company by their own standards on their borders in Electrical, but we would like them to be converted to our standards and to autocad '05 on our border. Is there a good method to do this or will they have to redo the drawings?
