As a CAD Managing inserfitude would you advocate purchasing a software
service that enabled you to copy and paste an HTML snippet that would be
embedded into web pages accessible on your LAN? The software service called
from the HTML snippet would enable project teams to IM and Web feed with one
    another.

No, never. We already have the ability to chit chat internaly via IM software. Why would you want to "web feed" another person ? That would require too much effort, easier to surf the web and feed yourself all you desire.

It brings people from outside the firewall into the collaboration process by
embedding IM in a page that comes through a port that is not blocked as
blocking port 80 would block all access to and from the web. Microsoft just
released a Messenger Web Toolkit and I'm wondering where the shoe fits. It
will also presumably marry up IM with logging, reporting, RSS web feeds,
    file exchange and markup.

Sounds good with all of the capabilities, but trying to sell people on software is difficult. Especially considering it would be a "service" that would be paid for rather than being bundled as a freebie with something bigger and better. Regardless of how useful (or useless) the software is marketing will be the biggest factor in determining wether companies will choose to implement it.

I should also mention that we (local government) do not monitor anyones web access as it then becomes public record and could cause embarrassment of elected officials and distrust by the public. So no monitoring would take place. It's bad enough that employees can spend the entire day surfing the internet and chit chatting with co-workers using the internal IM, knowing they will never be monitored. Given a more responsible team of leaders, the service could be beneficial. But as it stands now, there is no accountability so again, NO I do not think it would be a good idea to purchase such software services.

I see your point and its too bad that IM has become a double-edged sword as
its so quick and easy to use to clarify some project item that issuing a
transmittal which can then lead to a change order and so on.
