CADD Competance Test

I have been asked to put together some kind of a quick CADD test to screen
job applicants. I know I have seen an example of something like this but so
far my searches have not been successful. I would appreciate any help you
could give me.

Thanking You in Advance

Depends on your discipline or services.

This can be an easy drawing exercise, managing entity, layers, dimension,
limits.

Simply create a template of a finished drawing and have the person follow
your office standards.

Then set a given time to complete the exercise.

1. Track time
2. Office standards procedures, like layers, text, size, placement, etc.

Let's face it, you know when someone's drawn something correctly, using
fillet, offset, layering, dimensioning.

You'd be surprised to see how many people take an hour to complete something
that should only take 10 min. to draw.

But if the person can complete it in 5 min and drawn correctly, hire them
right away.

I will send you several tests outside of the NG. If anyone else needs them,
please let me know.

Phillip -

Why not post the test to customer files rather than having a bunch of "me too's". That
way anyone who wants them can simply go get them.

Tests DON'T work. A user can be proficient with the CAD application, but
not know from a hole in the ground in regards to thier occupation.
Also the user can be extremely proficient in their occupation, but cannot
operate a computer.

I have heard that how tests are administered can land you in legal hot
water.

any chance of posting those tests on the Customrer Files group?

Agreed. The best test is 90 days of "probation" where if the person is a
dunce you can send them down the road. I have seen absolute CAD geniuses
who did not know what a road profile was for, as well as great design
engineers who thought a polyline was the San Andreas.... Given the choice,
I'd stick with the San Andreas guy (or gal) and teach them CAD "the company
way".

I may be missing the big boat here guys but I think the idea of a CADD
competency test is only a part of the hiring process. I do agree that one
who has limited cad skills with great experience and design skills may (and
I stress 'may') have the edge over one who can draw like a wiz but doesn't
know squat about the discipline they are applying for. But I do think a
CADD competency test is no different than part of the interview in the fact
that one is simply asking how much you know about this area of the job.
Personnally I would not base my hiring of an applicant simply by the results
of a CADD test.

The best bet when evaluating a possible new employee is for the CAD Manager
(or person with a good solid knowledge of AutoCAD) to playa small part in
the interview process. On a resume someone can say that they have used
AutoCAD for 5 years but what they don't tell you is that they have used it 5
times over a 5 year period. You may wish to develop a form of AutoCAD
interview that would ask leading questions that you would definitely get a
feeling if they have used the product before. I agree that tests aren't the
best avenue, it might be better termed as an "AutoCAD Evaluation" that would
ask a lot of surface knowledge questions (nothing real deep) as well as some
face to face discussion. The only "legal" ramifications is when you term it
as a certification and place a price on it, in fact AutoDesk has gotten away
from their certification exams and are going down another path.

I recently had an interview with a company will gave me a test (noted by CAD
Manager as not a pass/fail test). It was basically a "draw what you see
while I see how you go about it" test, if you can really call it a test.
After I was done, we wanted me to mirror the object and text, keeping the
text the same. I typed in MIRRTEXT, and he then told me to stop because he
knew I knew how to do it. And the final test was to draw a 5' radius
circle. Trick question...I knew I was using decimal units, so I formatted
units to Arch., he said a lot of people get it wrong. Most of the drafters
there are 3 yrs + exp., just like me. Believe me, it wasn't a hard test,
but I can see what it shows an employer. I guess my point is that it was a
test, but not a written test, more of an exercise of how one works with CAD.
Just waiting on the hiring approval to come in, so I can turn my resignation
in.
