Bentley One-ups Autodesk

Check out what Bentley is doing with Google Earth.

Autodesk products prevent customers from using web
technology. Other vendors who may have been thinking they have nothing to
lose are beginning to show customers what they are missing. What is the
Autodesk response? Upgrade to 2007 because now you can actually print to
pdf! Whoopee.

Check out what Google did with Sketchup. If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em.

So don't upgrade. If you think all you can do with 2007 is print to
PDF, then it's obviously not the program for you.

I was lazy and read about it in a magazine this week. I haven't even had
time to follow up on it myself.

Google: bentley google earth

Nothing to see here, move along. We were doing this as a nifty use case in
Manchester back in January using C3D corridor models with over data
overlaid. Drop in a Revit bldg and you've got the same bloody useless thing.

Until Google Earth can account for site cut, ALL the drop in buildings in
the world are just that, pretty pictures backed up by fluff.

Why would Autodesk do this when Avatech has offered the solution for free
for months? Avatech Earth Connector has been out since January I think and
even if it were built into AutoCAD it would probably be a function that 1-2%
of the users would use. I think the new 3D stuff is far more important than
publishing to Google Earth.

Not that I don't like Google Earth. It helped us find a bar to meet at
before the Cubs game on Saturday.

Shoot, Bently has always one upped Autodesk. It's called customer support.
I am one of the many that is so glad to get away from using Autodesk design
software such as LDD. The Carlson product is so much easier and more
intuitive to use. Costs less, get design done faster = bigger bonus.

And you're still in the Autodesk newsgroups why?

Quote of the week when doing remote customer support (this is from the
customer) - "Wow, Bentley never has been able to do that!" I wish I
had recorded him saying it.

You know, I'd like to see you put Carlson up against C3D...that'd be
interesting.

I'm not taking sides here, but it all depends on the task at hand.
If you are talking about surveying tasks such as data collector
downloads, field to finish, COGO, then Carlson blows away LDT and C3D.

Different tools for different tasks.

We hired a new engineer 6 months ago. She had been working with MS and
InRoads up to that point. She has continually commented on how much easier
AutoCad and LDT are to work with.

I tend to agree with you...up until the point we see 2007 😉

I like to see C3d produce a product. While you pay for a program that is
not yet ready for production. I'll take my cash.

I don't use Carlson for survey. We do all our site design with it. Much
easier and faster then LDD by far.

We use both AutoCAD and Bentley (different customers ) and get along well in either- one question I have though - do we ever see the Autocad Technical guys on this forum - on the Bentley Forums you get answers from the development teams - and upgrades to the software in response to queries - i agree with the technical support comment
Both programs are good and do what you want - there are small differences, but even though Bentley introduced native dwg support I would still work an AutoCAD file in AutoCAD and wouldnt even consider trying to pull a dgn file to autoCAD.
Microstation also doesnt have the backwards compatibility changes as often as AUtoCAD- so far one non backward compatible upgrade in 15 years isnt too bad (and that was to give autocad support)

Yeah, you see the dev guys over there, but the groups are a wasteland in
general. I've watched groups go WEEKS without a single post. There's simply
no comparison. Adesk groups are a vibrant, active community. The Bentley
ones I've been in are a ghosttown.
