User in two groups-one permission override the other?

I have site users added to a project in groups corresponding to thier
company name, and assign them permissions based on the folders they need
access to. Now I've also added some users from each company group to one
other group, which I'd like to have available mainly for emailing purposes.
If I add the additional group to the project wth "no access" permission,
will each member still have thier original permissions based on the company
group they're originally attached to??

OK, I think I figured it out, the higher permission is always granted.
Also, I don't need to add the group to my project for emailing purposes, I
can just pick them from the site list.

The highest access level normally takes precedent. However, "No Access" overrides everything, whether set for an individual Member or through a Group.
