    PDF property to an Item

I fully understand properties of Autodesk CAD files and Microsoft files. They can easily be extracted in Vault, and exact properties (including custom) can be mapped into an Item Property.

My question is with non-Microsoft documents. Is there any way to extract a file property from a PDF? For example, the Title property is available through Windows Explorer, but is unsearchable in Vault.

I'm trying to embed as much information into the Non-CAD documents as possible, so that when an item is assigned, my properties are defined.

I do not want to just load the metadata into the item, because it is important that we keep the metadata in the file, not just in Productstream.

In order for the vault to understand document properties there needs to be
an "iFilter" (standard Microsoft thing) created for that document type -
there are a bunch of them out there. Just Google it...

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ifilter

There is one for PDFs available from Adobe - you can download and install it
here (you install this on the server not the clients):
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2611

After you install this filter you can re-index the database and it will find
the properties from all exisiting PDF files in the vault. From this point
you can start the mapping process.

    Hope this helps.
