Single Character Descriptor Keys - Good or Bad?

I am new to a frim that is in the process of converting from Eagle Point to C3D. I have created a descriptor key list and figure prefix library based upon the existing codes from Eagle Point. Some of the codes have a only a single character. I don't know if it is a by product of the single character or my learning curve, but when the crew shoots a ground shot (GS) C3D connects all of the ground shots with Gas Line which has a feature code of G. From the manuals that I have reviewed I thought that the descriptor key governed over the figure prefix. This result makes me think that they work independently. Does this mean that I will get a gas line connecting any point(s) that have G as the first letter of the description key? My current fix was to change the gas locate code from G to GAS. This solved the immediate problem, but I don't really want to have to develop a descriptor key file that has no repeated character pairs in the first 2 character positions.

Bad
Single letters are used as control codes. B= Begin E=End C=Curve ect.
Attached is a Point and Figure set for use with Leica Instruments.
Leica instruments allow mutiple atributes Control codes, and aditional point information.
Two files have to be setup in C3D the point file and the figure file.
Sugest doing all survey processing and adjustments in the instrument Mfr's software and then importing a *.csv file in the PENZD format.
Edit in MS Acess 97 Autodesk does not understand 2000 - 2010 mdb format
