Grid Display in 3D

How do you get the X and Y grid to display across the model at each level in 3D view?

I guess something like this :

That works, but you are limited to a single plane. It would be nice if the grid displayed across the model in the standard 3D view at each level, but maybe it makes the view too cluttered.
