Joining 2 steal beams of different sizes

Hi all,
Please could anyone let me know how I go about joining 2 steal beams of different sizes? When I use the 'JOIN' tool it does not fully work and extends one beam but at the same time moves the end of the other beam away so there is no join? I have no problems joining beams of the same size.
