Using Revit MEP with a 2D .dwg

I've only just bought Revit MEP.

All clients still send 2D AutoCAD .dwgs.

How do I use Revit MEP to do the heating and cooling load calcs using 2D Autocad dwgs?

Looks like I first need to create a space?

    This is what I've tried:

    -Link in .dwg

-Create space using Space Separator tool and then Space tool.

-Click Heating and Cooling Load Calcs

-Then it just says "Can't create any energy analysis load surfaces. There are no Space bounding elements defined in the current phase. Please check the Project Information settings."

-I looked in Project Information, all settings still default, Building Construction = <Building>, Project Phase=New Construction.

I'm not surprised that I have to enter more information, but where and how? I tried lots of ways to somehow give it more info on walls etc but can't find how I'm supposed to do this. Probably easy with a Revit file I guess.

I'm sure lots of people must have the same situation, why is it so hard to find any help doing this? I'm remote so there are not training courses near me. No help at Subscription Centre.

The Spaces need Floors, Roofs, Walls and Ceilings to tell the Load Calcs What is there and What category it is.  In short, you need to model the building.  To get accurate results from the Calcs, You will need the doors and windows, too.  I wouldn't bother using Revit with a 2D drawing.

In the Calcs, you tell the program what an Exterior wall is, Interior wall, Floor, Roof, Ceiling, Window.  The system will then use the spaces to determine what is actually modeled by category.  If the space is not being bounded by an object, it will treat it as a gap (open space).

You need an Architectural Model to take any advantage of the Revit system, sorry to say.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for trying, but as I said, I assumed that already, what I don't know is HOW to put in this detail.

And as for not worth using with 2D, thats what it was sold to us for, and we were told no problems its easy!

Another case of resellers blowing smoke. This is becoming a bigger and bigger problem from what I've seen.

You want to run load calcs, correct?  In order to do so, you need to model those items I mentioned before.

Your reseller told you that you can use Revit with 2D floor plans?  Time to get a new reseller.

I'm ok now, I got someone to show me and it IS QUICK AND EASY!

For anyone else with the same problem you just draw in the walls, doors, ceiling etc. using the Arch tools. Don't know how I missed this the first time.

Even having to do this it is at lot easier than using other calculation programs.
