edits to imported "organic" generic model families

I have a question that I'm going to present in a hypothetical manner because I don't know how else to describe it. This is going over the top with regards to what I'm looking to learn, but I think it presents the best illustration of what can or can not be done.

I modeled the "organic" piece as a Generic Model Family and then imported it to a Project template and have started modeling floors, but would like to be able to cut some holes in it to create door openings or windows or whatever. Is there a way to do this? Or does one have to edit and model from within the family?

I could go on describing things forever, but I believe my question is fairly obvious, just hoping there's a solution.

    Thank you

You will have to edit it in the family. Thanks for posting.
