Tried using a family template to add some common parameters and geometry and then saving back as a new rft in the default family templates location. As soon as its named and save attemted it crashes with unrecoverable error. Is save as .rft disallowed?

I know I can save as .rfa but idea is to replace some family templates with more than basic params so that dont need to keep repeating. Its still desireable togo back to a clean rft rather than pick a part or fully developed rfa. A developing some parameter naming conventions particularly for windows and doors where these can proliferate in great numbers.

When you say "saving back as a new rft in the default family templates location" are you renaming or saving a brand new family? If overwriting you uncheck Read Only in the existing first, then save over it. If this is a new family make sure you can write to the location. If all this fails what happens if you safe to My Document, or your Desktop?

Saving as .rft  brings up message "Encoutered an improper arguement". Tried as well as the default rft location to desktop, normal project files location etc. Doesnt make any difference. Was getting unrecoverable errors until update 2 lats week. Should I be able to save as a family rft? And also do some editing of the outofthebox family templates?

Encountered an improper argument is a Microsoft error. Is your PC up to date as far as MS is concerned? I tested in 2013 and 2012 and I see not issue in opening the out of the box template, editing it and saving to any location.

Thanks for looking into this. OS is Win 7 64b and set to auto alert for updates (with manual start) so is up to date. Not allot I can do then. Might see if 32b win desktop will allow and then overrite.
