I get the same error message whenever I try to import third-party DWG or DXF files (both simple and complex): "Import detected no valid elements in the file's paper space. Do you want to import from the model space". The result is always the same - nothing appears in the workspace. Can anyone please suggest a fix?

I have never gotten message and have not try to import 3 rd party DWG file.
Do you have access to a copy of Autocad or Autocad Architecture that you can
use to open the file that you are trying to import to see how the file is
actually laid out? Make sure the drawing within autcad file is located near
the orign (0,0) before importing.

Yes, that helped a lot. Many thanks.
I couldn't see the import at first because the plot was huge, dwarfing the A0 title block selected. Is there something that can be done to get the information to fit the title block, or is it the other way round?

Scale it on importing. In the Import dialog box is the Scaling section (lower left). Set the Import units: to Custom and enter a value in the Scale factor: box. You must know the scale factor. It sounds as if the DWG you where importing was in paper space and the viewport was scaled to, or the original model in model space was scaled larger than full size. Opening the DWG in AutoCAD and measuring a know distance tho determine the scale is the easiest way to get the correct scale for importing.
