Site corrupted - MG Server Fails to Start

I had to reboot my Windows XP development laptop
with MapGuide Enterprise SP1 installed today.  When it rebooted, the
mgserver process was consuming 100% of the CPU and appeared the MapGuide Server
service was trying to start but could not.  I confirmed this by looking in
the services control panel and using pskill, psservice, etc. to try to get the
service to start.  I finally gave up and completely uninstalled and
reinstalled MG server and SP1.  After installation, the service started
right up.  I then went into Administrator and changed the paths for
everything to point to my Repositories location.  I then restarted the
service to get the settings to stick, and the servivce would not start
    again.

So, at this point, the problem has to be corruption
in the repository somewhere.  Using the as installed Repositories folder, I
discovered that if I overwrote my Site folder with it's Site folder contents,
then the service would start.  So, it looks like somehow the files in my
Site repository folder became corrupt and was preventing MG server from
starting.  I have no idea how this happened, but it is rather
disconcerting.  Luckily it was only the Site data that was a problem and
that my Library seems to be fine.  Otherwise I would be reaching into my
    backups to restore from.

The Site repository contains the Users/Groups and related settings for an MG Site. For this to get corrupted is odd. I believe it is possible to delete everything from below the Site folder when the MG Service is stopped. Upon restarting the Server will recreate the required files for the Site. In fact this is also true for the Library subfolder as well. This at least is less work than a full reinstall. However you will have lost any custom users and groups that were created. Restoring from backup is the way to go. Although I've never seen this happen I would highly recommend anyone creating more than 2 or three users and groups to backup their Site repository using the backup mechanisms in the RepositoryAdmin folder.

Thanks Dave. I just tried deleting all of the files in the Site folder and
they were indeed rebuilt when the service was started again. The users were
then set to default, as you noted, but I was pleased to see that the the
Resource Service paths were preserved - so that information must be stored
elsewhere. I agree that it is odd for these files to become corrupted, but
my trouble-shooting definetely led to this being the problem. One thing to
note, when the reboot occurred, it was an automatic restart triggered by a
    Microsoft Office update.

If a situation occurs as noted by Andy let the service fail to start. From a command prompt attempt to start the mgserver in interactive mode "c:\....\mgserver.exe /interactive". It may be that a recover of the repository is being attempted and it may take longer than the time allotted for a Windows Service. If successful the mgserver should eventually start in interactive mode. If so then stop it and attempt to restart the Windows Service.
