I like the new(ish) feature where you can drag a section plane through a component, but is it possible to program a moving section and record it to an avi file? Is this something I can do in 3ds, Studio or Showcase?

You could do it in Autodesk Showcase, or you can do it Inventor Studio (link below for Studio example).

For Studio you need to create an extruded cut at the assembly level and then drive that cut thickness value in Inventor Studio.
