Why does my derived part turn into a surface part?

I am deriving a part from an assembly. After I remove parts that I don't want included in the derived part, the part is automatically switching to a surface part. I was initially trying to use the hole and extrude functions and kept getting errors. I saw that the part was being made into a surface part. How can I fix this? Thanks in advance!

I'm running Autodesk Inventor Professional 2013.

When you Derive Component there is an option to derive as Solid or Composite Surface.  I think the default is as Composite Surface body.  SImply edit and change.

I've tried to edit the part, but composite surface wasn't selected. I had derived other parts before this one and they came out fine. It just seems to be this part. I never changed the setting either.

It turned out that a weld was causing the problem. Once I excluded the weld from my part, it worked fine.
