Starting out - Sybex "Mastering Autodesk Inventor 2012" by Curtis Waguespack

Hi

I've bought the above book and am starting out teaching myself Autodesk Inventor 2012.  I've downloaded all Sybex's files for use with the book, however I've (only) got to page 21 and have got stuck!

The book says to open file mi_1a_001.iam, however as soon as I do this, it opens a window trying to "Resolve Link" which I'm guessing it means its searching for other files (like Xref's in AutoCAD) but it can't find them.  I've searched all the folders of the files I downloaded from the Sybex website, however they're not included.

Has anyone else come up against this problem?  The missing files are:

Arbor_Frame.ipt

PINION SHAFT.ipt

LEVER ARM.ipt

THUMB SCREW.ipt

TABLE PLATE.ipt

RAM.ipt

HANDLE CAP.ipt
COLLAR.ipt

GIB PLATE.ipt
GROOVE PIN.ipt

ANSI B18.3 - 1_4-20 UNC - 0.875(31).ipt

BS 4168 - M5 x 16(2).ipt

ISO 4766 - M5 x 5ISO.ipt

Thanks for any help!

Hi Darren - yes, definately using the correct project file.

I've followed the instructions in the book precisely and everything's worked as it says it should up until I click OPEN and then it starts to look for what appears to be the missing files.

What is the url to the file download link?

Those file names sound like the Inventor Tutorial/Samples file (but with different iam file).
(that particular design was done by one of my Beginning Inventor students.)

Have you downloaded the tutorial files?

The url is:

www.sybex.com/go/masteringinventor2012

See the DOWNLOADS tab for the files.

I've just downloaded the 2012 sample files as per your link and they appear to be the same.

Did you download the Chapter 12 and extract from the Sybex website.  Chapter12\Components\
That is where it is looking for the files.

I'd downloaded all the files, however had left them as ZIP files and only extracted Chapter One.  Now that I've extracted all 20 chapters, its working as is should.

Thanks very much for the help, you're a star!

Hi stark_uk,

As JDMather mentioned the book files reused files contained in the Chapter 12 folder without anticipating that some readers would download/unzip the chapters one at a time. I'll have Sybex update the files at their download link to include a self contained Chapter 01 zip file.

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.

And a big Thanks! to JD for his prompt attention to this matter. Smiley Very Happy

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Thanks Curtis; I just didn't extract all the chapter files as I thought I'd save space whilst I didn't need them - not realising that they'd reference each other.  It's all sorted now, so onto the next page!

I also emailed you directly Curtis, so please ignore that.

Thanks again!
