    Reference Dimensions

In 5.3 I can create reference dimensions in sketch mode to my hearts content. They became very valuable as I would use them to determine placement of multiple features. Now, in IV 7, I have alot of trouble creating reference dimensions from adjacent features on the same surface. I have to change the way I'm working now and it has stumped me on a few occasions. Does anyone else have issues with this and is there a "new" feature I need to enable or is this the cost of progress?

    Dennis,

Cost of progress. I assume you already noticed that the equal constraint
is has only about 20% the functionality as it did a few releases ago.

This reference dimension thing has continually given me a sore neck from
me cocking my head sideways and asking the monitor what the $&%@ it
    thinks it is doing.

    Sometimes you can force them.

Take a normal dim that affects the driven dim's placement and change it
to driven. Place a normal dim where you want the driven dim. Force this
normal dim to a driven dim via the styles pulldown, then change the
driven dim (that used to be a normal dim) back to a normal dim.

I was going to do a mockery of the "Single Day Productivity" slogan, but
    decided against it.

    !!!
Come on Autodesk! You just took the idea of "parametrics" and threw it out. I just want to create a reference dimension to drive another feature! You know... parametrically! IV5.3 had basically no problem performing this operation. Now it's "Failed to create linear dimension". It will not give me a simple dimension! Are we going backwords here?

Even now, Inventor 2010 doesn't seem to be able to use a reference dimension in an equation.

Post a part that illustrates the problem.  I've never had a problem using driven dimensions in an equation.

    Works fine here.
    I don't remember a time when it didn't?

You can see the values are used for the existing dimension and replacing the values with the reference dims causes there error. A cyclical constraint dependency was detected.

    Spoiler

Post ipt file here - I am not familiar with interrogating image files to find logic errors.
