    Project Face Bug 2013

I have been having heaps of trouble with sketches with projected faces falling over so I did some testing.  I have attached 2 similar files, they look the same but one is multi body and the other is single body extruded as 2 sections.  By moving the unconstrained circle in the sketch to the other side you can see what happens.

    Single body start

Now move cirlce to other side and see that the projected loop is confused highlighting edges on both faces.  Surely the circle should belong to the other loop for the face that it is actually on.

Now move cirlce so that is cuts an edge and see the model fall apart.

after accepting the error the loops are correct but sick.  That's really frustrating to see it is sick when it is actually correct.

Just for fun you could start again, roll back the model, add a polygon to the sketch, edit the extrude feature and select the new polygon, but the projected sketch doesnt update.

Next example - the multi body part - starts like this

    multi start.JPG

Move circle to other side, sketch is healthy but circle doesnt show

Now move circle to cut the edge, sketch is healthy and the cirlce is back YAY!

I am so tired of fixing sick sketches because project face is unrelaible - dont even get me started on projecting edges.

This is meant to be an inteligent, flexible design tool.  But making such simple changes can kill and entire assembly, especially as in my case when you use these sketches for FG members.

To make it worse, when a projected loop is sick you cant redefine it, you can only delete and recreate it and as such all dependencies get broken.

I hope someone from Autodesk will fix this.

    See Tip #44

I would not say "unreliable", but rather not a "robust" modeling technique.

Note that you cannot copy a feature created from a Projected Loop.

I very very rarely project a face.

Note this paper is 6 years old.
