I designed a simple pull-out dowel but when I dimension or attempt to retrieve dimensions in .idw, my dimensions display on a 45 degree angle.

I am sure someone will be able to explain exactly why, View orientation etc

But try this

 -Right click on the view

- Change "General Dimension type" to True (Or if already on "true", change to "projected")

Have you checked the styles editor to see if the default for this dimension style has changed?
