I am building a computer and trying to decide which graphics card to go with. I was considering the Nvidia GeForce GTX 480. The Quadro FX cards are so darn expensive! Has anyone used this card with Inventor?
I am also looking at an i7 980x processor, Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 m/b (usb 3.0 & SATA rev 3), 8gb ddr3 2200 mhz ram.
Thanks for any input!

Make sure you check the autodesk web sight and make sure that the card you buy is tested and compatable with inventor and the OS you plan on using. I have some students that have had problems with graphics cards and had to go buy a new computer half way through a semester because it couldn't handle it. another thing to look at is if you plan to use solid works or pro/e in the future make sure it is compatable with the OS and tested by the software manufacturer before making a final desicion. I just baught a $1,400 computer 3 months ago and probably have to get a new one because the computer place thought a gaming graphics card would handle what I needed. I should have done the research myself but didn't and now its going to cost me. Dig deep before making a desicion of your graphics hard I've seen alot of problems.

Why buy a new computer when you can just swap out graphics cards?

I know the card is not "supported," but I also know that the main difference between gaming cards and "CAD" cards is the driver. I have had a gaming card in the past that worked great in Inventor. I was hoping someone else had tried this card and had success. I am trying to avoid the Quadro FX cards because they are so darn expensive.

I can't just swap out a graphics card, and the card is only one small piece of the system I am trying to build. I am currently working on a laptop, but want to build a new computer, basically using some of the best pieces available.

Not a direct answer to your question but it might help. I have the GTX 285 and works perfectly fine with Inventor.

" I have the GTX 285 and works perfectly fine with Inventor."
Does it work with ray-tracing too, please?

If you mean what is found in 2012 and later, I cannot answer directly as I am still on 2011. I would assume so though.
I should be moving to 2013 after SP1 is released.

From what I have seen, it seems that the GeForce cards are a better option for Inventor these days. I have been directing customers towards them over Quadro and FireGL cards.
I almost always use the driver from the card manufacturers site over the drivers that Autodesk lists on their website as well.
