I have to show paint coverage/masking areas on certain parts, and to obtain the look I am after, I thought about using the split command and changing the face colors as necessary to show this. I have never used this command before, and was wondering what the pro's and con's are to using it, and also if this is even the best way to go about this?
Thanks for the help.

In your un-shaded IDW views, you will have this area show up as well.
Simply create a sketch on the surface you with to split, create your closed loop to define the area.

Make them multipart parts and you can color each solid seperately, yet it will list in the BOM as a single part.

My experience with surfaces in Inventor is if you don't have the proper surface edges already established either
through natural edges or tangent edges then you have to create a surface first using this command.
Then once you have your surfaces setup, all you have to do is RC on the surface and select "Properties" and change the color.

I use this command all of the time (Split - Faces).
I do not know of any cons.
Attach your file here if there is a specific concern.

Use the copy object command, select the face and either composite or surface command. Either will let you color them seperately just by selecting in the browser and applying color to the surface you create. Note: The colors will not appear as bright as you are used to seeing them (In my example Green (flat) Red (flat) and Blue (flat)). You must also create each surface seperately if you want to color them different colors, otherwise you can select multiple faces.
