I've also suffered from this problem.
http://discussion.autodesk.com/forums/thread.jspa? messageID=6382565
The issue with rendering images is I can only get 8 frames a sec out of movie maker using pictures.
I haven't looked at any other movie software for higher frame rates.
The only thing that is helping me is stripping the model back and the movie quality down to get more frames done.
I have been doing some tests on my machine to find out what gobbles the ram.
This doesn't help with the instant crashes however, which i also suffer from.
Attached is a graph of factors i was testing. (in my spare time!)

Hi Calaco,
Yes we are aware that rendering a Studio Animation crashes Inventor 2011.
We have a priority 1 defect open for this with number 1320689.
I will check with the developers to see what we can do about this in the short term.
Thanks for your patience.
Do you see any improvement if you set your Lighting style to "Current lighting" and your Background style to "Current style" or "Galaxy" ?

I am able to produce a video by selecting "preview - do not render" in the render window. Albeit, the realism is not there, but at least I can show the customer something... for now.
I am trialing 3ds max design as you can import inventor parts and assemblies. To my disapointment I am not able to bring in my animation timelines. Ultimately 3ds has no usefull render capabilities for what I need, like animating parameters. With inventor I can produce exact motions observing the mechanics of my design, but 3ds does not give you the same precision for motion (I wasn't able to find anyhow). Great animations are probably possible, with 3ds, but are not as straight forward/simple as Inventor Studio.
I think it would be an excellent idea if Autodesk would allow importing of the animation scripts, created in Inventor, into 3ds Max Design. This way we can render using 3ds and take avantage of the comprehensive capabilities of 3ds and render farms(using backburner). The render farm aspect alone would be worth while for me.
Or maybe I am misinformed... Maybe I wasn't patient enough with 3ds Max Design to see the Invetor Studio like capabilities... If I am wrong, someone please let me know as I would really like to be able to render quality video as that seems to be the deal clencher with my customers.
FYI: Solidworks can use render farms.
Last note: I am able to render images with no problem on 3ds Max design. I noticed that after each image is produced, 3ds Max Design releases the memory and after multiple renders my workstation still has the same amount of available memory. The inventor studio team should talk with the 3ds team... or for that matter Inventor should use the 3ds render engine.
Just some rambling thoughts but ultimately would like to see this bug fixed sooner than later. Edited by: calaco on May 25, 2010 2:39 AM

Bob,
It also crashes without warning when rendering a still at 1024x768 with
a reflective ground plane. Simple or complex model... no difference.

No it doesn't help using Current lighting, Current Background, nor using Galaxy.

We suspect something is wrong with the multi-threading that Studio is using.
Internal tests have shown that crashes can be avoided by eliminating the extra CPU on your machine and force Studio to use a single processor. This of course slows down the rendering process but we hope it avoids most of the crashes.
Here are the steps to go to single processor mode for Inventor:
1. Start Inventor, start Windows Task Manager,
2. Find the Inventor.exe process, right mouse click and select "Set Affinity",
3. Keep CPU 0 checked, uncheck others. Press OK.
4. Start rendering in Studio.

Stephen,
Do you have a multi-core machine?
If so, can you try to go to single processor mode for Inventor before dioing the rendering and let us know if it helps or not:
1. Start Inventor, start Windows Task Manager,
2. Find the Inventor.exe process, right mouse click and select "Set Affinity",
3. Keep CPU 0 checked, uncheck others. Press OK.
4. Start rendering in Studio.
Thanks

I am having the same issue with both Inventor 2010 and 2011. Every time I render a high resolution image in Studio it crashes part way through. I can usuall render a low resolution image but if I do this several times in succession it eventially crashes.
My machine is a Dell T5500 dual quad core with 12G RAM nVidia Quadro FX5800 graphics. Waiting for a service pack in August is simply not acceptable. There seem to be many users affected by this issue and Autodesk need to produce fix quickly. The software investment we have made is currently not making any return!!!!

I got the "Set Affinity" work-around to work with my machine. I can now render animations and stills (it would just crash before), but it's very slow.
Thanks,
Aaron
