Inventor 2011 Multi Site (WAN) Questions

    Hello Everyone,

Background: I am the IT Director for Budzar Industries, Inc. based out of Willoughby, OH (3-5 designers). We also have a branch in Shanghai, China which we would like to collaborate with (1 designer, but may be more soon). We design large custom heating/cooling process equipment for the rubber, pharm, plastics, etc.. industies using Inventor 2011 Professional. Our assemblies are a mix of custom drawn blocks along with content center driven blocks and typically amount to 2-30MB in size. WE DON NOT USE VAULT, only a Windows filing system based folder structure. We had Imaginit (RAND) and Autodesk try to implement Vault in our environment and were unable to.

    Questions:

    1. Is everyone in a Wide Area Network environment with multiple locations using Vault to collaborate? Are there other viable options? Should we be trying Vault again?
    2. What speed of internet connection are you finding is acceptable?
    3. Do the parts databases "sync" or do they transfer across the wire? Our files are to big to go across the wire, they must sync (we think).
    4. Is there a company out there that specializes in this type of implementation? Who have you used?

Anything you guys can tell us would be great. Thank you so much in advance!

No, we never recieved a reason why it was not able to work.  At the time we were using Inventor 2009 along with Vault 2010.  Let me be more clear though, the issue we were having is that we could not get legacy data into our Vault.  So previous projects we had done were unable to be moved into the Vault through Vaults Auto-Loader.  Autodesk acknowledged the problems and was able to reproduce them but never came up with a solution for us.  Our reseller and technical consultants, Imaginit, worked with Autodesk for months afterward and never got a reason.  After the hours put in and disappointment on our end, we simply continued business as usual.  No Vault.  But now we are trying to collaborate with our company in China and this is becoming a major issue.

    Dave,

This was years ago.  Our software and needs  have changed.  We are trying to decide what path to take now, not reopen old problems.

If you have a talk with us or put us in touch with someone we could talk with going forward that would be tremendous.

    Thank you for your time

Did you ever find a viable collaboration system for your multi-site Inventor?

Did you ever look at Talon Storage?

We had a recent webinar on our file sharing and collaboration solution.

Here's the link to the recording.
