    IV6 is the slowest...

    Group,
I did some testing to compare the graphic speed of various CAD programs,
using the 8000cubes assembly and would like to bring the results to
    everybodies attention.
The PC is a Dell 2.53GHz, with a Quadro4 900XGL. To get the frame rates I
used either the post statistics or a utility called FRAPS1.9.

    shaded mode:
    UGS18 62Hz
    MDT6 8Hz
    MDT5 7 Hz
    IV4 4.33Hz
    SW2001 4Hz
    IV5.3 3.3Hz
    IV6 2.7Hz

    3d wireframe mode:
    UGS18 72Hz
    MDT6 24Hz
    MDT5 22Hz
    SW2001 3Hz
    IV6 2.9Hz

Note: The 2d wireframe of MDT mode is very, very much faster, as has been
good old MDT3.01 in shaded/wireframe mode.
Definitely IV6 is by far the slowest package.

Min Full LOD Frame Rate change to 7, Min Gift Wrap Tolerance set to 0.2 (Registry), Enable Overlays
and fastlinear-mipmap-linear in OpenGL settings of display properties and re-run the IV test,
because I can can get 25Hz with all parts visible on a 12000 part assembly in 5.3 with a lowly
    Quadro2 card.

WARNING. CHANGING REGISTRY SETTINGS CAN MAKE YOUR MACHINE BECOME USTABLE AND IS NOT RECOMMNDED.

Run Regedit and change the following settings:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\Registry6.1\System\Preferences\Display

You will find it under here.

    John,
I did as you recommended, and in adition swaped the driver to 41.03, but no
    real difference.
The 8000cubes example is a tough thing - as it consists of simple cubes,
there is no geometry that can be simplified (or call it cheated) by the
driver. That's the reason why I use it to compare the graphic speed of
    different systems.

It would be easy for you to compare the speed of IV to MDT - just save as a
sat file and open this in MDT. The graphic speed should be independent of
    constraints, parametrics or features.

I will have a "play" myself when I get a spare moment. It could be another useful little routine
for my hardware bashing next month - will report back my findings and tests used.

I found it via search on LOD whatever that is. Thanks John, not really up on
that stuff, myself so I saved your post to refer to later ... if I can
manage to hang on to it, that is or worse, even remember it exist.

Now I'm really out of ideas...

Just tried to produce a 8000cubes array as features in a part file.
It took IV 12 minutes to create this (versus several seconds to do the same
    array in an assembly file).
    And then:

IV CAN ROTATE THIS WITH 59Hz!!!(shaded) and 100Hz wireframe!!!

    Anybody can explain this?

just curious, what type of system are you using @ what resolution?
