IPJ's someone please explain

I come from a Solid Works and I'm battling to get my head around projects (IPJ) can anyone help me find something on the net that explains this properly. If I have a part or assembly already created how do I go about finding out what IPJ was used to create these items?

In a nutshell an IPJ file is just a glorified text file instructing Inventor about a few things. For instance the most important thing that it informs Inventor about is where to open files from (which folder on your hard drive). Once Inventor knows where to look for files then it wont have a problem opening assembly files and drawing files for instance. You obviously know, as with SW, assembly and drawing files does not contain actual part geometry but only links to part names that Inventor will find and open when you open an assembly for instance. So by specifying a "Workspace" location in your project file, Inventor knows that it must not look anywhere else for part and assembly files.
So for a project that someone maybe gave you on a cd or memory stick, all you need to do is copy it into a folder on the server or local drive and set up a new "Single User" (Presuming you are not using Vault yet) IPJ/Project file in inventor. You will have to specify two things; A name for the project and the location to where you have just copied or still going to copy the design files. With this project set to Active, Inventor will default to that folder when you click on the Open button.
Other stuff you can specify in an IPJ file is whether or not a Styles Library must be used. This by default is set to Read only, so its in use but you cannot save changes to the styles library. Once you understand how to modify styles you might want to set this to Yes if you want to save your style changes globaly.
You will notice under the "Folder Options" portion of the IPJ file you can even overide where Templates, content and Design data are located. This is not critcal and I would keep this on default because then Inventor gets the info from "Application Options" from the Tools pulldown menu(Tools >> Application Options).
This is just a brief overview and a lot more can be done with project files.
