Autodesk Inventor

We are working with Inventor on a Novell network where the software resides on the PC and the drawing files reside on the server. Our IT dept has noticed that once we open an INV file the pings to the server grows exponentially even if we are not doing anything to the files, INV is just sitting there. It only drops when we close the assemblies. His concern is that we only have 3 people on INV now and we are using upto 15% of the server, what will happen when we put all 17 people on inventor. I would think our server will be maxed out.

Does anyone have any thoughts.

This is part of the reason we recommend working in
the Semi-Isolated environment.

What is, or how do we get a Semi-Isolated environment?

Read the 49-page doc-file in the documentation folder on the IV6 CD.

I just started using semi-isolated in my project, and it looks mightily impressive!

I am going to read the document, but back to my original question. What is it pinging for? If we're making changes I can understand, but if the assy is just sitting idle why does it continue to ping at what appears to be the same rate.

Maybe a Homing beacon?

j/k I am assuming it wants to make sure the file is still writable to the
opened from location. If not it would change its status.

I don't really know what this "ping" is, but an idea could be that the client is communicating with the license server on the server?
