    How to model an Oloid

    Hi

I am new to inventor. Can anybody show me how to model an oloid in inventor?

I can't get it to work using the revolve tool. I found the attachment in a previous post but

the post didn't really explain how he did it. Thanks.

Try attaching again-- WinZip claims it's not a valid archive.

If what you've posted is a .ipt model of an oloid, then you should be able to see how the creator modeled it by examining sketches and features.

The attached file is my (version 2013-- you didn't mention what version you're working in) attempt.  I don't know if it's mathematically correct, though.

I don't think anyone came up with a true solution back then

it might be interesting to give it a try again.

    Hi

I'm working in inventor 2013. I shall try to reattach the oloid version from the above mentioned thread.

It would be interesting to see if inventor can make a sheet metal pattern.

I've tried to use the shell function but I haven't been able to get it to work.

    Thanks.

    Hi

Sam B your oloid was a good attempt but comparing with oloid images from the net

I've noticed the ridge doesnt seem to go the whole length of the side meaning the

edge is just 240degree arcs on each end and the rest is transistion if that makes

    any sense.

Comparing to the solution from the other thread the end is also square (in profile)

on that one which I think is probably correct.

Anyhow good effort you made it a lot further then I could. By the way a good

documentary on oloids on youtube is "the old man and the oloid'.

    Thanks.

I took a crack at it and came close.  There is a visible flaw/artifact.  I'm not sure how to improve the loft; probably with more rails.  I modeled a quarter of the shape and mirrored the rest.  See what you can do with it.  I'm out of time.

    Hi JD,

I have had a few attempts at the Oloide and have something nearly right.

If you play with the dimension "Adjust sketch (1mm to 74.95)" sketch found within the Loft

called "Adjust this Loft" I can get some fairly interesting results (not perfect Class A but Ok).

    Any feedback would be welcome.

    Cheers

    Hi

I shall attach a mathematical paper on the Development of the Oloid.

I think figure 4 may be what a flat sheet metal pattern may look like.

    Thanks.
