I have 2 different diameter cylinders and I would like to create a plane that is tangent to both.

Probably more than one right way... but what I did was to create a sketch on the face of one of the cylinders, project geometry both cylinder OD's.  Then sketch a construction line tangent to both cylinders.  Finish Sketch.  Now create a plane by selecting the sketched construction line.  As below:

Like I said, there may be a better way to do this, but this seemed to work and was fairly easy.

In a part file (.ipt) or in an assembly file (.iam)?

I have attached one way to create a tangent across 2 cylinders.

Sam, Sorry about that, it is in an assembly (.iam) Mike

    Attach your assembly here.

    Here you go.

In an assembly, just create the work plane from any other plane or geometry you have available, delete any constraints that were automatically created, and then set new constraints to make it tangent to your cylinders.

Thanks for the info. I never thought to constrain the plane.
