    Frame Generator Trim/Extend

Having issue with trimming a frame out in between two pieces. I am sure it has to do with the starting and ending planes but would like someone to look at this. I have a 1.5"x1.5" square tube I need to trim in between a space about 1.5". The sketch extends the two perpendicular pieces and just cannot trim one end. I seems to trim where I dont need to trim. See photos.

    Hi Cool_Breeze_Jr,

Is it possible that you used Trim to Frame rather than Trim/Extend to Face. I don't see the issue when using Trim/Extend to Face, but can sort of replicate it depending upon selections when using Trim to Frame for the first end treatment.

    I hope this helps.

Hey Curtis, Thanks for replying lightning fast! And thanks for the quick pics as well. Being first year Inventor user I am still learning alot.

One piece of the puzzle I failed to mention is that the top long piece is at an angle something like 2 degrees.

I am going to lunch, will check back in about an hour.

Sometimes inventor will do this depending on the parts starting point. To fix lengthen the part you are trying to trim first in the direction of your trim so that the to be trimed side is longer than the side it is actually trimming. Then apply the trim and it should trim properly. Trim the one you did last first after you lengthen it. Your first trim needs to be last and that is the side you should lengthen about twice the distance so the part is longer on that side. Then inventor will know what is to be trimmed. The trim command not only uses base points, but also how much sticks out past the face you are trimming to. Your last trim happens to be at the parts base point so by default it tries to keep that side. After you lengthen the opposite end trim to that face first.

    Hi Cool_Breeze_Jr,

If you remove all of the end treatments from this member, and then use the Trim/Extend tool are you able to get more predictable results?

I'm sorry, in this example you will need to shorten the base side not lengthen the opposite end. It is usually one or the other for future reference.

    What you get:

    FG1.PNG

After first trim and shortening the base side:FG2.PNG

    End result after final trim:

OK I got that, but I just cant understand why it just wont trim out like I want it to. I got aroun it by trimming the end that is slightly angled and shortened the flush end 1.5". It works but should be alot easeir though.

Make sure you shorten it more than needed and then trim it to the surface, othewise if you change spacing between tubes that one wont update.
