on my ribbon, when i am in a part, when i go to change the color most of the colors appear black. is there a setting in windows 7 i can change to fix this?

Any chance you could post a screenshot?

Is your graphics driver updated to the recommendation on the certified hardware page?

Does it happen if you use performance or compatibility mode (Tools > Application Options > Hardware tab)? What about with the software graphics checked/unchecked?
