Someone posted about this a few weeks ago and I believe the answer was Inventor does not support exporting the thumbnails.

I also have being looking for a way to publish thumbnails on my BOM's.
This is the procedure I use,
Export bom to excel,
Save a copy of each part file as jpg.
Insert the excel file into word as a table.
Paste the jpg's in appropriate cells.
Hi yes the tool will work with Inventor 2012 and 2013. It looks like your Inventor did not register properly with Windows. This might sometimes happen because you did not install or run Inventor with a user account with enough rights or with UAC on. I would say try run Inventor "As Administrator" first and then try the command prompt method with the /install switch. Let me know if you don’t come right.
