I have an assembly file and associated drawing file. How do I create a modification (or new variant) and keep the original files. "Save copy as" works fine for the assembly but when I us it for the drawing I cannot find a way of pointing the new drawing at the new assembly.
another way:
open the idw with the Design assistant
copy all files you need (iam , ipt and the idw) to new names.
plan carefully what parts and assy need to have new names, otherwis you mess up the old assy.

another way: this would be best if you wanted to
try a few what-if scenarios.
- copy the parts that are going to change to
a new directory
- create a new project with this new directory as
the "personal workspace for group project"
- define the "group project file" as the IPJ of
your existing project
- make this new project the current
project
- modify your copied files, and open your
assembly
the assembly should find the modified files first
and not look any further. then it will find the rest of the files that didn't
change because the first instance of them will be in the workgroup
directory.
If you're changing parts in the assembly, you
should consider the other methods mentioned or look into design views where you
could control the visibility of parts.
