Have you set up the path in 3D-studio?? (customize>configure paths>plug ins>C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 6\Bin)
Guess you have!
I`m importing IV6 files directly in to 3DS 4.2, so it should be working in 3DS 5(have not tryed yet)
But I was having problems in the start, I had to set up the path a couple of times and reboot between.
Don`t know why.

I am running IV6 and 3dsmax5 successfully...
setting a path to Inventor\bin directory is all I did to get it to work. And...
STEPing the part out will not get you into to 3ds as there is no import filter
for STEP. Are you getting the 'cannot load plugin' error on startup or are you
getting an error when you try to import the data?

I have to mention this again... Autodesk: the file
names are being truncated to the first character of the Inventor file name when
brought into 3dsmax 5. Is this a known bug?
