Here's how you turn off "smileys":

1. Go to "My Settings" (above)
2. Select "Preferences" tab
3. Select "Display" sub-tab
4. Set "Emoticon Type" to "None"

Ta-da!  No more smileys!  

Also note that there's an "Insert Code" button above (the icon is a "C" on a clipboard).  This is a good option for when you're inserting a full line or more of code.
