Would like to be able to tell a flood fill to fill in any 'holes' within itself (think ignore island detection in AutoCAD hatch).

The only way to do that now is to hide the objects which make up the islands.

Thanks for the tip, but I can't find a way to hide individual objects. Are you doing this on a layer basis?

It's true you can't hide individual objects, only layers, layer groups and views.
There is a work-around for this problem, but it isn't very convenient. You can create a temporary layer, select the objects you want to hide, then use the right-click menu in the viewport to send them to the temporary layer. Then hide that layer, create the fill, and put the objects back on their original layer.
That's not very easy, but it gets the job done.
I agree that having an "ignore islands" option is a good idea.

While we are talking about an 'ideal world' I wanted to add that having island dectection as an option when opening or importing .dwg files would also be very desirable.
I've been working on setting up templates for my team to use to import their .dwg files and get quick results based on layer names. The idea being that we could develop a method that allows them to create simple colorized plans of their 'production' cad drawings when the most recent versions need to be sent to the client 'on the fly'.
Island detection with the fills becomes a make or break item in these cases.

Greetings,
I am curious how 'production' documents work satifactorily in Impression if you use the layer approach.
Most production drawings are not set up for use in Impression. For more thoughts on this take a look the comment I posted in Autodesk Impression General entitled 'What I have learned about impression so far'

"Island detection with the fills becomes a make or break item in these cases".
I think you're describing what I've just run into: door and window frames are rectangles within rectangles. I want to drag a style onto the Door Frames layer and have the style fill between the rectangles, leaving the glass area unfilled- in other words, I need island detection when assigning a style to a layer. I agree that this is a "make-or-break" functionality.
