STEP Export

Hello there,

since making use of 3Dsmax too I got to notice that exporting to STEP usually takes ages.

Is there a better way to export to Max while keeping groups and appearances from Inven-

tor?
I would need that to animate flyovers and movement of some parts within the assembly,

therefore it´s crucial to keep grouping at least down to the *.ipt level. Tesselated body object

import of native iam files tends to work too, at least sometimes. Body objects feature the

desired grouping but are void of materials when imported.

The suite workflows on the other hand don´t work at all. Has anyone figured a good way to

get this conversion to work properly? Till now it seems to me that a workflow is strongly de-

pendant on the size and the types of appearances used.

Options and their limitations are:

Import *.iam to Showcase and save an FBX

Pro´s: Materials preserved, cameras preserved

Con´s: Grouping is lost, sometimes odd clouds of points appear out of nowhere

Export STEP from Inventor

Pro´s: Materials apart from textures are preserved, some groups are preserved

Con´s: Grouping is preserved on object level only, Materials are grouped together

Import body objects- native Inventor format in MAX

Pro´s: Grouping is the same as in Inventor

Con´s: Materials and appearances are lost completely

Ideally grouping should be the same and the appearances should be as they are in Inventor

after importing the dataset. I think that´s what the native Inventor import option promises,

but it just does not work that way. Every bit of information to get this to work is extremely

useful, so please share...

Kind regards

Daniel

I forgot one option:

Import native Inventor file as Mesh with groups by material disabled

Pro´s: Grouping preserved, materials and appearances preserved

Con´s: takes ages with large assemblies

Sorry 🙂
