Part names

I liked some advice.

I am working to make our products to convert to Inventor.

Now walk with us the positive discussion how the files should be named.

To be clear do you use the entire name, but that may have long names.

Example BandrasterStandardPanel.

Now, some say keepyoure name as short as possible the other says it must be clear.

It may happen that you use youre  part in iLogic  and then a long name is not always easy.

We do not want to work with numbers that you can not see what it is.

Are there any guidelines or advice please let me know.

Have your already made the decision?

My advice is that:

Work out the Code:

• the first two number(00,01....) means your project name;
• the second number means your category of your design (01,02...)........
• the last is your file name, say Panel

So your part number should be like 01-02-001-Panel. After that, you can split the string and save the 01-02-001 as part number And Panel as Description in Inventor iProperties. That will be easy read them in BOM.

You can define the numberring schemes in Vault (Professional).

It is not about the part number.
Our panel part number starts with 700 and goes up to 1000 per project.
If a Meandro in the panel is assigned the number an addition of 2 digits.
For example 700-12.
For me it's the file name that is visible in the browser and the name that is used in iLogic.
The name 'BandrasterStandardPaneel "is an example name.
We may also use abbreviations, BSP-01, the numbers would be the type to indicate if  an opening is in it.
A full name is clear but a long name which you use in iLogic quickly make a mistake.
For me it's the file name in the directory where all the panels are, so you can clearly see from the name which panel you need.
We want to apply a folder structure where all components are neatly divides. (See attechment)
We want to copy a project file  to break the relation with other projects and work with the new file in a new project .

I don't have Vault Pro yet so i can't use Numbering schemes.

Hi Jos,

It is recommended to make a folder structure. That will be helpful when you use the Vault afterwards. I want to say please use the one project(.ipj) in Inventor but different nested folders to store the different projects in the directory.That will be easy to copy the project and redesign based on that.

The attachment is the structure of the folder in Vault which the one customer succeeded to apply.
