    Melanie,
Having had twenty years in the CAFM industry, I'd like to let you know that CAFM in the USA, including CAD Standards, discussion groups, events, conferences, you name it -have been going on for many years. Yes, CAFM is still a niche area, but more and more colleges are offering four year FM degrees. IFMA is an international organization which has many good programs, and also AFE, AIA, APPA, among others.

    Have a great day!

Oh, I am familiar a little with those organizations, but, there doesn't seem
to be a lot of activities on discussion boards specifically for CADdies
trying to figure out how best to do things (like there are for so many other
disciplines). Reading any of those cad-geared discussion groups, the vast
majority of the posts are from students working on those degrees, or
questions answered by self-promoters (who've realized how profitable their
knowledge in a niche market could be).

You, too... thanks for chiming in! :smileyhappy:

    Melanie,
You are so right! This might be just the place for such discussions! IMHO- CAFM is a topic that is just beginning to be "cool". I think there are quite a few people who are just getting started, or who are taking a second look, and who should not have to reinvent the wheel for such things as typical space types or CADD Standards.

As a part of the league of self-promoters (we are CAFM consultants), I typically will email a person privately with information that I'd rather not share with the masses.

There can be good for all in a forum where everyone is excited about the topic, and honest in their expectations.

In answer to your original question, we generally recommend a modified BOMA that is easier on CAD upkeep- i.e polylines to face of paint, and fewer layers.

To me, CADD Standards need to be written with the end user in mind. I also think that there may need to be different portions of the CADD Standards available based upon job descriptions. Some people need the single page version.

    I greatly appreciate your posts!

    Jan,
I think it is, but, :smileywink: most of the time it is just me talking to myself
about things I've seen or been thinking about. I get irritated having to
reinvent the wheel because I know that all of the things I am trying to do
    have been done before.

I really think the topic of FM is getting more exposure because of the
advent of BIM (why create all of this information in a building model if it
is only used during construction?), and the purchase by adesk of FMdesktop.
Mostly because of the BIM thing though, I've seen soooo much more
information/speculation/planning/training out there recently all dealing
with the topic (google alerts are a handy tool to keep my pulse on things
    like that).

The challenge for a facility manager in CADD standards is that you will
either need two sets (one for facilities and one for contractors), or one
that is so broad and vague that both groups can use. And the biggest
challenge is making everyone happy (or not quite so angry at the least :smileywink: ),
as the architects work far differently than the MEP consultants and space
    planners, etc, etc, etc.

    :smileyhappy: same to you, thanks.
