Beth,
My health system is just beginning to require BIM deliverables on large
projects, and will later require them for all projects. We're primarily
going with Revit with the Architects and they're trying to guide the
MEP's into that as well.
Revit MEP is still a relatively new product (is this it's 4th release?).
But, that is the way I'd like for our department (Engineering) to go
ourselves eventually.
The problem with that is that the MEP houses are smaller than the
Architectural firms. They haven't invested in BIM yet. There just aren't
many skilled people out there using it yet, and there are only a few
experienced teachers out there teaching it.
But, they're adding more content to it every day. In fact, I've got a
friend who is a mechanical engineer who just got a job with a company
who is supposed to be building a lot more content for it. So, that's
pretty comforting.
Also, the RMEP project manager, Kyle B, posts videos on topics that
explain questions regular users have asked here in the discussion
groups. That's service.
It's going to be a long hard road no matter which way we go. But, the
thing is... whether they use AutoCAD MEP or Revit MEP, they're probably
going to have to get a lot of training, and that could be expensive.
They'll probably also have to upgrade their machines, etc.
But, I would hope they would spread that cost among many customers and
not stick you with all of it (because, ultimately, while they're
learning to do this for you, they're also making themselves and their
employees much more valuable in today's changing market).
