project constructs

I've been learning ADT for a while now and I finally get the feeling things
are starting to become clear...
There's one thing that I still can't figure out;
I want to draw up a single level and repeat it on different levels.
So I tried drawing this level in constructs > this level I defined as being
on 'level1' in the properties.
Then I made more constructs, dragged this first construct on them and then
setting their properties to 'level2 / 3 / etc'.. So I would only have to
change something in level1 to change all the levels.. The new levels are
only XRefs of level1 right??
But the problem is - eventhough I redefine the construct to a new level..
the drawing appears in the same place as the original, instead of the next
level. So I manually moved up the construct in level2.. but STILL level2 is
in exactly the same position as the original [level1]... WHY??!! Why won't
this work??!! am I totally missing things here or is ADt just being
illogical on me here?
.. someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong.. or how to achieve what I'm
trying to do.

Not sure if I follow what your saying but I think the method is;

If you want one plan for various levels then tick those boxes for that
construct.
ie, for the first drawing tick levels, 1,2,3,4 etc.

This way you will only have one drawing which you can change once.
Why have mutliple drawings if they are the same thing?

eg. You may have a unique level 1, level 2-5 may be different, then a roof
(6) level.
= 3 drawings.

If something small is different on level 5, you can construct both the
different section out to a new drawing and apply the first part to 1-4 and
the other to 5.
That way most is contained in one drawing (for ease of changes) and the
different part is different drawings.

Do the tutorials, they are easy to follow and will show you what you are
after.

Then again some one may correct me. I don't to much over 2 levels.

After you create the initial construct, simply right click on it (in Project
Navigator) and select 'copy to other levels' (or something like that...I
don't have it open at the moment). Then select all the levels you want to
copy it too and ADT will automatically copy it and create an additional
construct for each level you selected. These should then come in at the
appropriate elevation when you generate views.

Also, if this is to represent a 'typical floorplan', you would then want to
first create your floor plan...or the typical part of the floor plan...as an
element. Then, create your first construct, x-refrence in the typical
floorplan element. Now, after you copy the construct to other levels as
mentioned above, when you want to modify the typical floor plan you simply
take care of it in the element and it will be reflected throughout the whole
model.

Cheers,

Julian

For repeating building elements, use an element, drag it on your constructs.
Each level has it own construct.

Now that's a clear story Julian, could you do the helpfile tutorials for the
next ADT version? ;D hehe.. it's a bit like getting a 'glass of water after
finishing dinner' but thanx a lot. Now that I'm here anyway.. could you tell
me how I can get a sectionline to show up in all my floorplan views and
generate this 2Dsection in another view? 😉

One other thing I forgot to mention...if you are using annotation that is
pulling project information (using property sets with project data and
formulas) - such as the level number as the first number of the room
number - and you've fully annotated the first construct...when you copy the
construct to the other levels...all your annotation is automatically updated
as the room number will be changed in the resulting constructs...say from
202 to 302 and 402, etc... and your door tag's will then also change to say
302A and 402A etc...

Cheers,

Julian

thanx Fred!! In fact I had just had that idea myself.. I tried it.. opened
my overall view and was disappointed to see it was not there. Then I Saw
your message coming in on the newsgroup.. huh?? it puzzled me, but then I
realised.. wouldn't it be a good idea to reload maybe? [zit te slapen
zeker?]
I guess it's quite ignorant of me not to think of using the elements before,
the idea of elements as being room-blocks just clouded the idea of using
them on level-scale...

thanX !!

Yeah, that's what I thought! but it doesn't work like that at all...
Checking [ticking as you call it] more levels for a construct does NOT mean
the construct will be -repeated- on all those levels. It only means the
construct may be shown for those levels. So if I draw up one level and check
the others, there is still just the level I have drawn. I CAN extend the
walls up to 1,2,3 etc.. now, but this means I will still have to draw the
levels instead of arraying them up to the other levels.. that is not what I
want/need.
Thanks for your comment, it is clear to me I'm not being stupid.. you think
it should work in the same way I first tried it myself too! 😉 Too bad it
does not work according to our 'logic' ..

btw.. this is also what is said in ADT itself.. beneath the level-checkboxes
it states:
construct has been set to -spanning- by selecting one or more checkbox.
Construct will be insterted on the lowest checked level and objects in the
Construct will be shared.

If you are asking how to generate a single section through multiple floor levels, you need to create a view that includes all of your floor levels and then generate the section from there.

Have you had a chance to read through Chapter 5 of the printed New Features
Guide? There is a pretty good overview of the Drawing Management system
there. Also, the tutorial in the Help system walks you step-by-step through
a multi-story sample project.

Yes, I did that.. but it is not what architects
need is it? I need to see the sectionline in all the levels [in the right places
preferably] and I need a -seperate- sectionview (not in the same view as my
3Dtotal model).

If I understand this correctly I'm stuck with
only being able to have a section in the -same- view as a full model. Also,
there is no way to display sectionlines in planviews. 😞

Go to the website of paul aubin, he has a sample chapter of his new book for
ADT 2004. I believe its chapter 5. A very good explanation of working with
the drawing management system.

Don't confuse the section line with the section tag. The section line is
what actually defines the section, but it is not considered an annotation
item. You can find a variety of section cut markers on the "Annotation" tool
palette and in the Architectural Desktop Documentation Tool catalog. You can
use these wherever you need to key the section.

Wherever I need to key the section.. So if I move a section in a sectionview
drawing, the sectiontags in other drawings move along with it? I can hardly
emagine.. how are they supposed to be linked? but if you say so, I'll have a
try.

The section line and the tags are not linked. I would suggest that you not
place the keys/tags until the section locations are stabilized.
