It's actually "SHADEMODE" which is causing the text to disappear. If a
viewport's shademode is set to anything other than "2D wireframe", text in
paper space, which crosses the viewport, will be wiped out. You can tell is
a VP is set to 2D wireframe by looking at its UCS Icon (assuming it is
turned on). If the icon consists of simple blue lines and markers, than it
is 2D wireframe... if the icon is multi-colored 3D graphics, than it is not
2D wireframe. You can set this with the View > Shade menu, or the Shade
toolbar.
